Early, experiments were carried out in England as early as 1888, and the Celtics first tried to hold a lighting competition in the friendly match between Clyde and Christmas in 1893. Because of the novelty, the Christmas game attracted 5000 spectators to play football with the help of electric lights. Football has previously been played in Scotland under artificial lights, especially at the Edinburgh exhibition, but this is the first such game to be held in a stadium owned by clubs such as Celtic Park. About 16 arch lights are suspended above the stadium with wires fixed to more than a dozen 50 foot tall wooden posts. At the same time, nearly 100 gas injectors provide additional lighting along the covered housing. In addition to the obvious dazzling multiple wires hanging on the court, the cables also tend to sag too low and interfere with high-altitude passing.
Finally, in January 1894, when St. Bernard football club was defeated 8-1 by Celtic in the Scottish Cup quarter final, the problem reached its climax. After the game, St Bernard protested to the football association because the ball hit an electric wire. St Bernard withdrew their protest because the ball hit the barbed wire only twice in the game, but insisted that their initial objection was based on principle. Noticing the apparent failure of night football at Celtic Park, the club quickly abandoned the idea.
Incredibly, Bhoys next played under the floodlights against the Michigan all stars during the U.S. tour on June 25, 1931.
